16 Δεκ 2018 · San Gorgonio Peak (also known as “Old Grayback”) is a beautiful and challenging out and back trail in the San Bernardino National Forest. This peak is the tallest in Southern California and offers incredible 360 degree views of the entire surrounding region.
The climb up to San Gorgonio is long, but so so worth it. It is a rite of passage for any Southern California hiker, and it is the perfect training hike for some of the higher peaks in the Sierra. A wonderful hike all around!

Mount San Gorgonio sits at over 11,500 feet, and it has a commanding presence as the tallest mountain in Southern California. This hike is not one that should be undertaken without a lot of training as it is a brutal ascent of over 5,400 feet and 17.5 miles round trip.
The peak offers views of San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Imperial counties on a clear day. To the north, Mount San Jacinto and Mount San Gorgonio can be seen, and on a very clear day, Mount Baldy can be seen too.
San Gorgonio Mountain (11,499’, 3505 meters) is a must for peak baggers.Southern California’s highest peak positively dominates the surroundings for miles with a bit of competition from the neighboring mountains, San Jacinto (10,804’), and Mount San Antonio (10,064’). Together these three peaks form the ‘triple crown’ of southern California.
The summit of San Gorgonio (11,499 feet) is 3 miles beyond High Creek. The upper end of this trail offers outstanding views of Yucaipa Ridge and Galena Peak, as well as sweeping panoramic views from the top of Mt. San Gorgonio.
