14 Φεβ 2024 · Satellite glial cell. The cell bodies of neurons located in sensory and autonomic ganglia are each surrounded by a cellular sheath of small cuboidal cells, known as satellite cells. In light microscopy, usually only their nuclei are identifiable.
Satellite cells are characterized by their small size and minimal cytoplasm. They possess a high nuclear-to-cytoplasmic ratio, which is indicative of their stem cell nature. Under a microscope, satellite cells appear as small, flattened cells adhering closely to muscle fibers.

Satellite glial cells have polygonal form; they are mononuclear and have developed synthetic organelles, numerous receptors, adhesion molecules and ion channels, which enable them to interact with adjacent neurons, as well as transmit signals in the ganglions of the peripheral nervous system.
