11 Ιουν 2024 · CT. Arachnoid cysts are extremely well circumscribed, with an imperceptible wall, and displace adjacent structures. When large, and over time, they can exert a remodeling effect on adjacent bone. CT cisternography (introduction of contrast into the subarachnoid space) demonstrates communication of the cyst with the subarachnoid space.

Arachnoid cysts should be included in the differential diagnosis of sellar cystic lesions. Other sellar cystic lesions may present with similar clinical and radiological findings. The definitive diagnosis is made on histopathologic examination and immunohistochemical staining.
The optimum imaging of the sella and parasellar region is with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Computed tomography (CT) imaging is complementary to MR imaging for the depiction of bony changes, including remodeling or frank bone destruction.
This article reviews embryology and anatomy of the sellar and parasellar region. Imaging appearances of pituitary adenomas, Rathke cleft cysts, meningiomas, craniopharyngiomas, arachnoid cysts, vascular disorders, infectious abnormalities, and pituitary apoplexy are discussed and illustrated.
Abstract. Arachnoid cysts are developmental anomalies that can originate anywhere in the CNS. They are often discovered as an incidental finding, remain asymptomatic, and can be monitored with serial imaging. They rarely cause symptoms requiring surgical intervention.
