Creatinine in itself is not harmful but a high level indicates that the kidneys are not working properly.
We start dialysis when the eGFR has declined to between 5 and 10 ml/min per 1.73 m 2 and symptoms have advanced to the point at which treatment is expected to effect some improvement. Patients avoid death by undergoing a burdensome treatment that prolongs their uremic illness—in effect maintaining them in a state of severe renal insufficiency.
