Fractures of the sesamoid bones of the pollex, are treated with immobilization of the thumb for a short period, and this results to a quick recovery of the injury 4, 5. Only two cases are reported in the literature in which the pain lasted for several months 6.

2 Οκτ 2014 · Anteroposterior and lateral radiographs may help in identifying fractures, but an oblique view of the thumb is best for diagnosing a sesamoid fracture. 4,11 Treatment of fracture of the sesamoid bone of the thumb is usually 2–4 weeks of immobilization with the MCP joint in slight flexion. 4
Three cases are described to illustrate the two types of the injury. An open fracture of a thumb sesamoid associated with laceration of the palmar plate in a child was treated by reapproximating the palmar plate and the fracture fragments with sutures.
Six fractures were treated with splint or cast immobilization for 2 to 3 weeks, and two were taped. Clinical followup of the seven patients with isolated sesamoid fracture at 6 to 8 weeks revealed pain-free normal function.
Type 1 sesamoid bone fractures can be treated conservatively with immobilization of the thumb and the MP joint in 30° of flexion for 2-4 weeks. Taping may also be sufficient. If pain and discomfort persist after adequate conservative treatment, excision of the bone may be needed. 21,23
Standard A-P and lateral X-rays revealed a fracture of the radial sesamoid and the fracture was treated with a splint for 3 weeks. He was able to resumed his entire work 6 weeks after the injury.
