Recovery from sesamoiditis or a sesamoid fracture depends on the severity of the problem as well as the symptoms. Recovery can take a long time, with multiple weeks or months of wearing a cast and not putting any weight on the foot.
Six fractures were treated with splint or cast immobilization for 2 to 3 weeks, and two were taped. Clinical followup of the seven patients with isolated sesamoid fracture at 6 to 8 weeks revealed pain-free normal function.
Two additional closed fractures of the thumb sesamoid were treated by splinting the metacarpophalangeal joint in comfortable flexion for 2 to 3 weeks. Normal hand function was restored in all the three patients.
You may need surgery to treat the thumb fracture, depending on the location of the break, the alignment of the broken bone, and the amount of movement between the fragments. Your surgeon may use one of several operative fixation techniques to realign the bone fragments.
