The sesamoiditis may be caused by more repetitive motion to the fall of the foot, while the fracture is caused by more high energy injury like running or jumping. While most sesamoid fractures can be treated conservatively, they are more likely to need surgery than the sesamoiditis condition.
Usually the treatment of sesamoiditis is noninvasive, but a Sesamoidectomy is recommended when the conservative therapy fails and symptoms persist for more than 4-6 months. Video of Fibular Sesamoidectomy here below.
This can result in sesamoiditis (i.e inflammation in the bone), and in some cases a complete fracture of the sesamoid. Symptoms can persist for weeks, if not years. Clinical exam, plain film radiographs, and MRI can all be used to make a diagnosis.
