Our tax and finance staff supported the filing of around 42,600 tax returns in 2022. We aim to adhere to international best practices and aim for accuracy and timeliness when we fulfil our tax filing obligations.
The report outlines Shell’s approach to tax and taxes paid and covers 97 countries and locations across all our businesses. For the detailed basis of reporting of these publications we refer to the Payments to Governments Report and the Shell Tax Contribution Report respectively.
Profits are assessed by the tax authorities in the countries and locations where we are active. Shell’s global profit was $25.5 billion for 2019 and the corporate income tax we paid was $7.8 billion [B]. In most countries and locations, the corporate income tax we pay differs from the tax charge.
Number of tax payments. 8,126. In 2022, Shell filed around 5,300 direct tax returns and about 37,300 indirect tax returns. We filed these on time in almost 100% of cases. We also processed more than 25,600 separate tax payments. Occasionally, tax returns are submitted late.
