17 Σεπ 2023 · The Imam Husayn Shrine, located in the city of Karbala, Iraq, is one of the holiest sites in Shia Islam. It is the burial place of Imam Husayn Ibn Ali, a central figure in Shia tradition and the grandson of Prophet Muhammad.
Sunni Muslims and Shia Muslims agree on the three holiest sites in Islam being, respectively, the Masjid al-Haram (including the Kaaba), in Makkah; the Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, in Medina; and the Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa, in Jerusalem.
The two holiest sites in Shia Islam after Mecca and Medina are the Imam Ali Mosque in Najaf and the Imam Husayn shrine in Karbala. A significant practice of Shia Islam is that of visiting the shrines of Imams in Iraq and in Iran.

Apart from mosques, the most important sacred spaces for Shiites are the shrines of the Imams located mostly in Iran and Iraq, which believers visit during pilgrimages.
