The term “dram equivalent” is a holdover from the days when shotshells were loaded with blackpowder. Blackpowder is (or at least was) measured in “drams.” This is a weight measure, where 16 drams equal one ounce.

16 Οκτ 2008 · "Dram equivalent" is an archaic measure of how much black powder might be needed to duplicate the performance of this new-fangled smokeless powder stuff. The use of dram equivalent as a measure of the "power" of a shotshell should have stopped 100 years ago, but it persists.
