On September 26, 1872, in the New York City Masonic Hall, the first Shrine Shrine Center in the United States was organized. Brother McClenachan and Dr. Fleming had completed the ritual and proposed that the first Shrine Center be named Mecca.

The Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, more familiarly known as the Shriners, was established in 1871 by William Jermyn Florence, an actor from England, and Dr. Walter Millard Fleming, a surgeon.
While the fraternity’s first official meeting was in 1871 at the Knickerbocker Cottage, a meeting in 1872 established the first chapter, Mecca Shriners, on September 26. Today, there are more than 195 chapters in countries around the world.
