On September 26, 1872, in the New York City Masonic Hall, the first Shrine Shrine Center in the United States was organized. Brother McClenachan and Dr. Fleming had completed the ritual and proposed that the first Shrine Center be named Mecca.
Shriners International, formally known as the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (AAONMS), is an American Masonic society. Founded in 1872 in New York City, it is headquartered in Tampa, Florida and has over 200 chapters across nine countries, with a global membership of nearly 200,000 "Shriners". [ 1 ]

At a meeting of Mecca Shriners on June 6, 1876, a new body was created to help spur the growth of the young fraternity. The original 13 Masons of the Knickerbocker Cottage lunch group were named Charter Members of Mecca Temple.
Founded as the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, the organization has grown and evolved over the decades. In the late 1900s to early 2000s, the fraternity was referred to as Shriners of North America, given that chapters were in the U.S. and Canada.
