Sodium chloride (0.9%) is not balanced because it contains only two electrolytes, sodium and chloride. Crystalloids may be used as replacement or as maintenance fluids. Replacement fluids are intended to replace lost body fluids. Maintenance fluids are provided to keep up with normal sensible and insensible fluid
Fluid therapy in clinical medicine is used to fulfill the following objectives: (1) to replace dehydration deficits, (2) to maintain normal hydration, (3) to replace essential electrolytes and nutrients, and (4) to serve as a vehicle for the infusions of certain intravenous medications.
Treatment should be initiated promptly and includes rapid correction of the sodium levels. We can drop the sodium levels rapidly by resuscitating or hydrating the patient with a low-sodium fluid. VETgirl’s general rule? Hydrate the patient first with a lower-sodium fluid such as LRS or Plasmalyte-A.
Treatment of dogs with an acute presentation prioritizes correcting the hypovolemia, hyperkalemia, acidosis, and hypoglycemia. Fluid therapy addresses most of these issues, but other directed therapies may be required in the most severe cases.
