Assemblage is vital to art practice and offers two important lessons regarding assemblages: irstly, the making of assemblages is a dynamic but also deliberate rather than random process. Second, the juxtaposition of distinct elements can be transformative, generating new entities, new possibilities and new ways of understanding.
It is a multiplicity which is made up of many heterogeneous terms and which establishes liaisons, relations between them, across ages, sexes and reigns – different natures. Thus, the assemblage’s only unity is that of a co-functioning: it is a symbiosis, a ‘sympathy’.
