Speech can be seen as controlled breathing. An utterance begins with a breath. As we exhale, we modify the flow of air in a variety of ways to produce the various sounds of speech – the individual segments of sound or phonemes as well as the suprasegmental or prosodic features of stress and intonation.
3.2 Classification of Speech Sounds in English Every language has a limited number of speech sounds. All speech sounds including the English sounds are usually classified into two broad categories: vowels and consonants.
