Seven primitive campgrounds are located throughout the park. These require you to pack in all your gear. Each area has 3 to 5 individual campsites, depending on the location. All sites have a shared privy, bear locker, and fire ring. Except for Murray Branch, they also all have picnic tables. Sites are limited to 6 people. Shinny Creek

Located in Burke County 55 miles east of Asheville, South Mountains State Park is situated at the crossroads of the Appalachian Mountains and the Foothills to provide the ultimate backcountry experience.
The Primitive Campsites. The campsites have fire rings, privies, and shared bear lockers which is nice. Inevitably, the bear locker opens and closes multiple times because most new backpackers don’t have a system down yet. People often “find” food in the side pockets of their packs.
