Fast-growing, Morella cerifera (Southern Wax Myrtle) is a densely bushy, evergreen shrub or small tree with glossy, aromatic, oblanceolate, olive green leaves, 3-5 in. long (7-12 cm). The foliage emits a bayberry candle fragrance when crushed.
Select a male and female plant to produce the ornamental waxy-blue berries, that are a high energy food source for birds; tolerant of wet or dry, infertile soil; aromatic foliage repels insects, and is used to make candles; a great hedge or screen.

Southern wax myrtle is an incredibly tough evergreen when grown in the Southern climates where it is best suited. This North American native can be grown as a large shrub (pruning or hedging to size) or allowed to develop into a small tree.
Considered the southern bayberry, this native broadleaf evergreen shrub or small tree can grow 20-25' tall and 8-10' wide but is usually much shorter. When new growth develops in the spring, the rich bayberry scent is most prominent.
