Lynx were widespread on the Iberian Peninsula before the early 1900s. Hunting and habitat loss pushed this species to the brink of extinction by 2002, when fewer than 100 lynx could be found in Spain. Today, thanks to ongoing conservation efforts, numbers of Iberian lynx are on the rise.
In 2004, there were thought to be around 100 Iberian lynx in southern Spain and due to efforts from both the Spanish government, and organisations such as WWF, the population is thought to have tripled to over 300 now.
Iberian Lynx or Spanish Lynx aka King of Doñana (Lynx pardinus). The word lynx is said to come from the Greek ‘leukos’, meaning bright. It refers to the lynx’s eyes which reflect light and shine like jewels when lit up.
The Iberian lynx is found in two isolated populations in southern Spain, specifically in the Doñana National Park and surrounding areas, as well as the Sierra Morena range. Efforts are underway to protect and expand its habitat, as it is one of the most endangered wild cat species in the world.

It is an endangered species, with only 1,000 remaining in the wild. Its prized fur and label of agricultural pest has greatly reduced its range.
