sp hybridization is observed when one s and one p orbital in the same main shell of an atom mix to form two new equivalent orbitals. The new orbitals formed are called sp hybridized orbitals. It forms linear molecules with an angle of 180°.

S orbitals have a spherical shape, p orbitals are dumbbell-shaped, d orbitals are shaped like a cloverleaf, and f orbitals are characterized by more complex shapes. You can also look up more detailed images for the shapes and orientation of atomic orbitals in your textbook.
These orbitals have different shapes (e.g. electron density distributions in space) and energies (e.g. 1s is lower energy than 2s which is lower energy than 3s; 2s is lower energy than 2p). (image source) So for example, a hydrogen atom with one electron would be denoted as $\ce{1s^1}$ - it has one electron in its 1s orbital
Explanation: Each orbital is denoted by a number and a letter. The number denotes the energy level of the electron in the orbital. Thus 1 refers to the energy level closest to the nucleus; 2 refers to the next energy level further out, and so on. The letter refers to the shape of the orbital. The letters go in the order s, p, d, f, g, h, i, j, etc.
14 Αυγ 2020 · Learning Objectives. To understand the 3D representation of electronic orbitals. An orbital is the quantum mechanical refinement of Bohr’s orbit. In contrast to his concept of a simple circular orbit with a fixed radius, orbitals are mathematically derived regions of space with different probabilities of containing an electron.
sp³d and sp³d² Hybridization. To describe the five bonding orbitals in a trigonal bipyramidal arrangement, we must use five of the valence shell atomic orbitals. These include the s orbital, the three p orbitals, and one of the d orbitals. This combination results in five sp3d hybrid orbitals.
Learn the definition of orbital hybridization and the characteristics and geometries of sp, sp2, sp3, sp3d1, and sp3d2 hybridization.
