22 Ιουλ 2016 · Creative problem solving, in which novel solutions are required, has often been seen as involving a special role for unconscious processes (Unconscious Work) which can lead to sudden intuitive solutions (insights) when a problem is set aside during incubation periods.

For an example of a sudden insight into the solution of a complex problem, consider Wagner Dodge, a smokejumper who survived the Mann Gulch Fire in August 1949 (Mclean, as cited in Klein and Jarosz, 2011). On a very hot day, a fire broke out in Mann Gulch, a canyon near Helena in Montana.
10 Φεβ 2022 · First, I will discuss how we might define and characterise problems and problem solving; then I will consider incubation and serendipity (separately and together). Finally, I will discuss suggested mechanisms by which external and internal serendipitous events may bring incubation periods to successful conclusions.
This chapter argues that intuition and incubation are aspects of implicit thought, and a facet of implicit cognition. Keywords: stages of thought, implicit cognition, intuitions, insight problem solving, incubation, implicit thought, Wallas.
The basic phenomenon is a familiar one: we are working on a problem, we can’t solve the task, we leave it aside for some period of time—the incubation period—and when we return attention to the task we have some new insight that helps us to solve the problem.
26 Φεβ 2018 · The experiments reported here investigated whether interactivity enhanced incubation effects with the cheap necklace problem. Participants attempted to solve the problem in a low-interactivity condition with pen and paper or in a high-interactivity condition with a set of metal chains.
Providing an overview of the main issues, findings and implications of cognitive research on incubation effects in problem solving and creativity, this book argues that incubation is an effective strategy for tackling problems that do not yield to initial solution attempts.
