Brief History of the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis. Even before Archbishop John J. Glennon announced “I propose to build a temple in the name of the Lord my God,” in February of 1905, plans for a new Cathedral for the Archdiocese of Saint Louis were already underway.
The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis, also known as the Saint Louis Cathedral, is a Catholic cathedral in the Central West End neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. Completed in 1914, it is the mother church of the Archdiocese of St. Louis and the seat of Archbishop Mitchell T. Rozanski.
The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis, commonly known as the New Cathedral, was constructed in the early 1900s and completed in 1914. Upon the walls of the Cathedral are over 41.5 million pieces of glass with 7,000 different colors (Donnelly).

The Basilica of St. Louis, King of France, also known as the Old Cathedral, and the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis, also known as the New Cathedral, stand as symbols of Catholic belief and remain well-known icons of religious architecture.
23 Σεπ 2022 · The cathedral was completed and dedicated in 1914. The new edifice replaced the old cathedral of St. Louis (today a basilica), which is still standing and can be visited at its beautiful location near the city's Gateway Arch monument.
