The Basilica of Saint Louis, King of France, also known as the “Old Cathedral,” was established in 1764 by Pierre Laclede and Auguste Chouteau, who founded the city of St. Louis only one year earlier.
It is one of two Catholic basilicas in St. Louis (with the current cathedral) and both are named for King Louis IX of France (the namesake of the city). [3] The current structure (built 1831–1834) is located near the historic riverfront of St. Louis. It is surrounded by Gateway Arch National Park.
Formerly known as the Cathedral of Saint Louis, referred to as "the Old Cathedral". Named in honor of Saint Louis IX, contains many impressive features, including the marble altar, the resored wooden altar rails, several statues and paintings of significance.
