15 Απρ 2024 · Interpreting results — Blood culture detection of Staphylococcus aureus should always be regarded as clinically significant, even if only a single positive blood culture bottle is observed . Identification of positive blood cultures should prompt initiation of empiric therapy as well as further clinical evaluation.
Ideally a Gram stain of the colony should be performed and tests made for catalase and coagulase production, allowing the coagulase-positive S aureus to be identified quickly. Another very useful test for S aureus is the production of thermostable deoxyribonuclease.

Interpretation. Slide coagulase test is the main method used to identify S. aureus in clinical laboratories but it has some limitations. About 15% of ordinary strains of S. aureus and many more of MRSA give negative reactions. Few species of coagulase-negative staphylococci give positive reactions.
