Steed is a secret agent working for an unnamed branch of British intelligence. He was teamed with a variety of partners, including Dr. David Keel (1961), Dr. Martin King (1962), Venus Smith (1962–1963), Cathy Gale (1962–1964), Emma Peel (1965–1968), Tara King (1968–1969), Lady Diana Forbes-Blakeney (1969), Purdey, and Mike Gambit (both 1976–1977).
During The New Avengers John Steed had two younger partners: Purdey and Mike Gambit.
While working in London on the Churchill series, Macnee was offered the role in The Avengers (1961–69), (originally intended to be known as Jonathan Steed), for which he became best known.
A character named Hana Wilde (played by Charlotte Rampling) had essentially acted as Steed's partner in series five's "The Superlative Seven", an episode in which Emma Peel appears only briefly. In reality, Patrick Macnee, who plays Steed, was in the Navy. The villain of the piece is taking revenge on the men who had him imprisoned many years before. Since escaping from jail, he has become immensely wealthy and now uses the pseudonym of "Monty Bristow" whilst exacting his vengeance.
During the era of The New Avengers, the elder Steed was revealed to be the second-in-command of the department and worked with two younger partners, Purdey and Mike Gambit. Patrick Macnee starred as John Steed for the last time in the The New Avengers episode Emily, which was first broadcast in the United Kingdom on 1st December 1977.
