The United States is the world’s largest steel importer (2019 ranking). In 2019, the U.S. imported 26.3 million metric tons of steel, a 15 percent decrease from 30.8 million metric tons in 2018.
Finished steel import market share was 24% in December and 21% for full year 2021. Key steel products with a significant increase in 2021 vs. 2020 were hot rolled sheets (up 89%), plates in coils (up 75%), sheets and strip all other metallic coatings (up 69%), oil country goods (up 67%) and wire rods (up 62%).
The United States imported steel from more than 100 countries and territories in 2018. The 10 countries highlighted in the map below represent the top sources for U.S. imports of steel, with the U.S. receiving more than 950 thousand metric tons from each and together accounting for 77 percent of U.S. steel imports in 2018. The U.S. imported 7.5 million metric tons of flat carbon and alloy products in 2020, accounting for 37.4% of total steel mill imports (the largest category). This was followed by semi-finished carbon and alloy products at 5.1 million metric tons or 25.7% of total imports.
The Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) System, under the Department of Commerce, collects and publishes early warning data of steel mill product imports. By design, this information provides stakeholders valuable information on steel trade with the United States.
From May 2021 to June 2021, U.S. imports of steel mill products increased 16.1% from 2.3 million metric tons to 2.7 million metric tons. June 2021 steel imports were up 109.9% from one year ago and increased 59.8% from the 2020 average monthly volume of 1.7 million metric tons.
