Some are more noticeable than others, and some have had significant impacts on the landscape with tragic outcomes. The most noted and well commemorated is the Stockton Mine disaster. The Stockton Mine subsidence occurred at 5:00 A.M. on December 18, 1869, claiming 10 lives.

1 ημέρα πριν · Stockton, 16 miles north of Tamaqua, was a busy hamlet of 1,200 people, home to East Sugar Loaf Mines when coal was king. To maximize output, miners sometimes “robbed the pillars.” Pillars were columns of coal left in place to support the mine roof.
