Student engagement represents the time and effort students devote to activities that ate empirically linked to desired outcomes of college and what institutions do to induce students to participate in these activities.
In. this article, we seek to develop the theoretical basis for student engagement in a way that high-lights the student's own contribution. We explore how learning involves students taking responsi-bility for action in the face of uncertainty, whether in pursuit of personal or communal concerns.
