Early history. The exact origin of Sufism is disputed. Some sources state that Sufism is the inner dimensions of the teachings of Muhammad whereas others say that Sufism emerged during the Islamic Golden Age from about the eighth to tenth centuries.
Sufism (Arabic: الصوفية, romanized: al-Ṣūfiyya or Arabic: التصوف, romanized: al-Taṣawwuf) is a mystic body of religious practice found within Islam which is characterized by a focus on Islamic purification, spirituality, ritualism, and asceticism. [1][2][3][4][5] Six Sufi masters, c. 1760.

It consists of a variety of mystical paths that are designed to ascertain the nature of mankind and God and to facilitate the experience of divine love and wisdom in the world. Sufism arose as an organized movement after the death of Muhammad (632 ce ), among different groups who found orthodox Islam to be spiritually stifling.
As situated within the purview of world philosophies, Sufism refers to the Islamic mystical tradition as a whole: a historical phenomenon composed of a diverse complex of attitudes, ideas, doctrines, practices, texts, and institutions that share certain features with the mystical traditions of Islam's cousin faiths, Judaism and Christianity.
