D&D 5e spell damage comparison chart. Analysis. Here's the chart itself. I've calculated the average damage of pretty much every damaging spell in the PHB and EE Companion. I've left Storm of Vengeance out, though; too complex XD.
Damage/Effect. Control (...) You suggest a course of activity (limited to a sentence or two) and magically influence a creature you can see within range that can hear and understand you. Creatures that can't be charmed are immune to this effect. The suggestion must be worded in such a manner as to make the course of action sound reasonable.
The table now includes the base average result of the spell's damage roll, and then calculates the effective average damage in base of that, the expected success rate and whether it saves for half. Added fields for damage type and for whether the spell has any riders (such as crowd control or debuffs).
Here is a Spreadsheet that I made of all damaging spells from the Player's Handbook for Wizards. I calculated average damage of the spell from level 1 to 5, including using higher level spell slots (up to level 5), to determine the highest damage to one target, one time.
To know what damage to expect at a certain spell level, and all of that. The average damage is calculated on the assumption that attacks will miss and saves will be passed roughly 50% of the time. It's certainly an oversimplification but, as far as I know, is a common standard for these things.

I did my best to avoid counting the SRD and PHB version of spells multiple times (I.E. Only counting Bigby's Hand and Arcane Hand as one spell). The filters I used included all official sources up through Tales From the Yawning Portal as of the compilation of this chart.
