1 Σεπ 2024 · Social determinants do influence the rates of psychiatric disorders and suicide. Different cultures have different patterns and types of suicide, as seen in Japan and India. Cultural values and mores can contribute to suicidal ideation and acts of deliberate self-harm across cultures.
Society and culture have a significant impact on how people view and relate to mental illness and suicide. Culture, in particular, influences the psychopathology of suicidal behaviour and its impact on suicide rates across the world is well established.
Cultures vary in their stigma against suicide, in treatment availability, in classifications of suicide and mental illness, and in the infrastructure for monitoring death by suicide. These differences render cross-national comparisons of suicidal behavior difficult.
Through the lenses of critical cultural suicidology, we aim to reflect on the relationship between suicide and sociocultural aspects, emphasizing the importance of context, cultural meanings, and the role of culture in suicide research and prevention strategies.
