In the past, the usual treatment for thyroid cancer after thyroid surgery was to achieve TSH suppression with a low TSH. However, current American Thyroid Association guidelines for the management of thyroid cancer recommend a TSH target in the low normal range for most low risk thyroid cancers.
12 Φεβ 2019 · Higher free T4 levels were associated with higher risk of solid cancers (HR 1.42 per unit increase in free T4), lung cancer (HR 2.33), and breast cancer (HR 1.77), although no association were found for TSH levels . Collectively, these prospective studies support a causal association between disorders in thyroid hormones and cancer risk.
9 Ιουν 2020 · Kuijpens et al. demonstrated that low levels of free T4 (fT4) are an independent risk factor for the development of breast cancer in peri- and post-menopausal women (risk of cancer in patients with low fT4 levels (≤10th percentile which is equivalent to ≤12.5 pmol/L, OR: 2.3; 95% CI: 1.2–4.6).
22 Ιουλ 2024 · Cai et al. demonstrated that serum levels of TSH and free T4 were significantly decreased in cortisol-producing adenomas (CPAs) as compared to healthy controls and asymptomatic adrenal incidentalomas. This study also revealed a negative association of cortisol, TSH, and T4 serum levels with CPAs.
There have been studies suggesting that higher levels of free T 4 in the blood may be associated with an increased risk of developing a solid cancers (for example, lung, breast, prostate, gastrointestinal (GI) cancers). Other studies have not agreed with this finding.
