Taiga Forest. The Taiga is one of the three main forest biomes. The other two are the temperate forest and the tropical rainforest. The taiga is the driest and coldest of the three. The taiga is sometimes called the boreal forest or the coniferous forest. It is the largest of all the land biomes.

What is a biome? A biome is a way to describe a large group of similar ecosystems. Biomes have similar weather, rainfall, animals, and plants. There are a number of biomes on planet Earth. See the map of the world biomes below.
Life in the Taiga. The main trees of the taiga are pines, spruces, firs, and larches. These are all conifers with needle-shaped leaves. In the south, trees with broad leaves—for example, alders, aspens, and birches—grow among the conifers. A layer of low plants grows on the forest floor.
