Terminal buds are located at the tip of a stem (Figure 3). When terminal buds are removed (called pinching when done on herbaceous plants), plants will develop a denser and typically wider growth habit. Lateral buds are borne on the sides of the stem. Adventitious buds arise at sites other than in the terminal or lateral position.

Terminal bud – Bud at the tip of a stem. Inmany plants, auxin (a plant hormone) released from the terminal bud suppresses development of lateral buds, thereby focusing the growth of the plant upward rather than outward. If the terminal bud is removed during pruning (or natural events) the lateral buds will develop and the stem becomes bushy.
In perennial plants a terminal bud happens each spring. This forms a cluster of terminal bud scale scars, thus it is possible to determine the age of a shoot and its pattern of growth by observing the number of bud scale scars. The distance between bud scales indicates the length of yearly growth.
