This species is endemic to North America and can be spotted most often in open plains close to bodies of water.
Though dry, the region is home to many species of animals including pronghorn antelopes, coyotes, black-tailed prairie dogs, Texas horned lizards, prairie rattlesnakes, lesser prairie chickens, roadrunners, burrowing owls, ferruginous and Harris hawks, and curlews.
