There are three types of courts in Texas, generally. This includes the courts of last resort–the Texas Supreme Court and the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. There are intermediate courts of appeals. And there are trial courts.
District judges, county-level judges, and justices of the peace serve four-year terms. Municipal judges usually serve two-year terms. Judicial vacancies in appellate and district courts are filled by appointment of the Governor.
The Texas court system consists of five layers, including municipal, county, district, and regional appellate courts, as well as two high courts. Together with the legislature and the executive branch, the judiciary is considered one of three co-equal branches of state government.
The judicial branch of Texas government includes the court system of the state and the judicial agencies, such as the Office of Court Administration. Its role is to interpret the law and to resolve legal disputes.
