The lieutenant governor of Texas is the second-highest executive office in the government of Texas, a state in the U.S. It is the second most powerful post in Texas government because its occupant controls the work of the Texas Senate and controls the budgeting process as a leader of the Legislative Budget Board.

The office of the lieutenant governor is part of both the executive and legislative branches. According to the Texas Constitution the lieutenant governor is also the President of the Texas State Senate. The lieutenant governor becomes governor if the elected governor resigns or dies while in office.
The governor is inaugurated on the third Tuesday of January every four years along with the lieutenant governor, and serves a term of four years. Prior to the present laws, in 1845, the state's first constitution established the office of governor, serving a term of two years, but no more than four years of every six. [ 5 ]
