The aromatic and aliphatic nature of a coal can be evaluated by solid NMR spectroscopy, which was applied to the two coals in this study: the (HA/BA) Aliphatic and (HA/BA) Aromatic ratios were found to be 1.52 and 0.65, respectively.

Near-surface lignite occurs in two elongate bands stretching from the Rio Grande (Webb and Starr Counties) to the Red River (Bowie County) and Angelina River (Angelina County). Deep-basin lignite occurs coastward and downdip from the near-surface occurrences.
