These units are known as the meter (m), kilogram (kg), second (s), kelvin (K), candela (cd), mole (mol), and ampere (A).
However, the planet Earth itself (including everything out to the outermost Atmosphere) is an approximately closed system. It certainly exchanges energy with its surroundings: Earth’s main source of energy is the Sun.

The Earth is a closed system for matter. The Earth is made up of chemical elements – think of the periodic table. That is a list of all basic elemental materials on our planet. Because of gravity, matter (comprising all solids, liquids and gases) does not leave the system. It is a closed box.
As a whole, Earth is a closed system—or at least very close to being a closed system. Energy reaches Earth in abundance in the form of solar radiation. Energy also leaves the system in the form of longer-wavelength infrared radiation. Matter, on the other hand, is largely confined within the system.
Viewing Earth as a system means understanding each of the system’s parts and how they work together. We can learn about the Earth system by beginning with observation.
