Canaletto conveyed the sunlight that drenches Venice in fair weather, sparkling off the canals and revealing fine-etched details of the tiles on distant rooftops or the bricks beneath peeling stucco.
Although the artist was little-known in his own day, his views of Venice are now highly prized for their atmospheric qualities and broad, sketchy brushwork. The Rialto Bridge, built in 1592 as the first stone bridge to span the Grand Canal, is the focal point of Guardi's composition, one of several versions of this popular attraction.
This series of drawings shows various points along the Grand Canal. The drawings capture the canal’s busy atmosphere, with figures in gondolas, rowing boats and caorlinas (cargo boats). The drawings appear as if they have been drawn from a boat in the centre of the Grand Canal, with the buildings on each side converging to the horizon.
This work is almost a portrait of a building: the imposing facade of the Palazzo Grimani fills nearly the entire composition, towering above the surrounding houses along the Grand Canal. Boatmen emerge from the left and right just in front of us, giving the scene a sense of movement.

Painted upon his return, The Grand Canal is a stunning example of this practice. A distinct pencil drawing, generally thought to be applied on-site, is visible throughout the composition—particularly in the area of the Rialto Bridge in the distance.
