David Guzik commentary on Matthew 24, in which Jesus predicts the destruction of the temple , and what the disciples are to expect before His Second Coming.
Matthew 24 is undoubtedly one of the most encouraging, yet often misunderstood, chapters in the New Testament. The context of Matthew 24, is a time right before the crucifixion when Jesus condemned the Jewish religious leaders and their house of worship because of their rejection of Him.
Matthew 24, often referred to as the "Olivet Discourse," records Jesus' prophetic discourse on the destruction of the Temple, the signs of His second coming, and the end of the age. Jesus underscores the importance of vigilance, warning His followers to stay alert and prepared for His return.
Chapter 24, and for that matter chapter 25, contain our Lord's answer to His disciples' three questions about His appearing as the Messiah King to establish His millennial kingdom on the earth and the events surrounding this appearing.
1. He is faithful; stewards must be so, 1 Cor 4 2. He that is trusted, must be trusty; and the greater the trust is, the more is expected from them. It is a great good thing that is committed to ministers ; and they must be faithful, as Moses was, Heb 3 2. Christ counts those ministers, and those only, that are faithful, 1 Tim 1 12.
Matthew 24:4-5. In the first place—and how appropriate and necessary, considering the eagerness of the disciples for the second coming!—a warning against false Messiahs , and then Matthew 24:6 f. the first, far off, indirect prognostics of the second advent, like the roll of the distant thunder.
Christ foretells the destruction of the temple, Matthew 24:1, Matthew 24:2. His disciples inquire when and what shall be the sign of this destruction, Matthew 24:3 . Our Lord answers, and enumerates them - false Christs, Matthew 24:5 .
