The total iron binding capacity (TIBC) reflects the available iron binding sites on transferrin. It requires the measurement of serum iron and transferrin that is not bound to iron (i.e., the unbound iron binding capacity, UIBC). The TIBC is the sum of serum iron and the UIBC.
Serum iron is reported to drop with acute infarct of myocardium. TIBC is increased in iron-deficiency, use of oral contraceptives, and in pregnancy. TIBC is decreased in hypoproteinemia due to many causes, and is decreased in a number of inflammatory states.
The TIBC is the total iron binding capacity. It equals UIBC plus the serum iron measurement. Some laboratories measure UIBC, some measure TIBC, and some measure transferrin. This test helps your doctor know how well that protein can carry iron in the blood.
15 Δεκ 2022 · Total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) measures the total capacity of your blood to bind and transport iron. It is used to estimate the amount of iron stored in your body [ 1 , 2 ]. TIBC is an indirect measure of transferrin , a protein that binds iron molecules and transports them in the bloodstream.
A TIBC (total iron-binding capacity) test is a blood test that measures your blood’s ability (capacity) to attach (bind) to iron and carry it throughout your body. Healthcare providers use it to help diagnose iron-deficiency anemia and other iron metabolism conditions.
