The steel can be coated with differing thicknesses of tin, and even different thicknesses on the two faces (differential coatings) may be produced to cater for varying conditions at the internal and external surfaces of a container.

Steels for packaging are thin gauge flat carbon steels, tin or chromium coated on both sides. This particular combination gives the tinplate an interesting set of properties: strength and stiffness, formability, weld-ing ability, lacquer ability and printability, good cosmetic appearance and corrosion resistance.
Parts are rack or barrel plated to ASTM B 545 standard thicknesses from 0.0001" to 0.00006", depending on the base metal and application. Pure 99.5% tin is used for both selective and complete plating of parts.
Tin Mill Products, General Requirements [Metric]1 This standard is issued under the fixed designation A 623M; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year of original adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision.
Tin should be not less than 99.5% pure except when alloyed for special purposes. An underplate of nickel at least 50μ" thick is required for tin coatings of 100μ" or less that will not be exposed to solder temperatures (especially ones that will function as a conductive surface).
