SCCs usually develop in areas that have been damaged by sun exposure. In people with pale skin, they are mainly found on the face and neck, bald scalps, shoulders and arms, back of hands and lower legs. In people with darker or black skin, SCCs are more likely to affect areas that have less, or no direct sun exposure.
Basal and squamous cell skin cancers often don't cause bothersome symptoms until they have grown quite large. Then they may itch, bleed, or even hurt. But often they can be seen or felt long before they reach this point.
Photos of skin cancer. Skin cancers can look very different. They might be: a spot or sore. a lump. a red or dark patch. itchy, crusty or bleeding. The earlier a skin cancer is diagnosed, the easier it is to treat. So it's important you visit your GP as soon as possible if you notice a change in your skin.
