The Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar is a restaurant and tiki bar in the Fairmont San Francisco hotel in Nob Hill, San Francisco, California. Named after the South Pacific nation of Tonga , this dining and entertainment venue opened in 1945.
11 Δεκ 2014 · When word of the Tonga Room’s endangered status got out, a grassroots effort to save the bar grew quickly, inspiring petitions, letters to city officials, and a Facebook group that peaked at 4,000 members.
The Tonga Room was originally designed as a small bar and restaurant, but it quickly became a local hotspot for San Francisco’s elite. In 1948, the Devore family purchased the Fairmont Hotel, where the Tonga Room was located, and they immediately began expanding the bar and restaurant.
Swathed in thatched huts and towering ship masts, Tonga Room embodies the history of tiki culture— and has inspired a burgeoning tiki revival in San Francisco and beyond.

The Tonga Room has gone through several incarnations over the years, themed initially upon opening on September 18th, 1945 as a cruise ship (the S.S. Tonga), then in the '50s as a Mondrian-esque Chinese restaurant, then finally in the '60s the current theme of a Polynesian paradise took hold.
