Lately I've had a hard time finding a good scary book to read. I read all of Stephen King (Salem's Lot) and Dean Koontz (Phantoms) books. Peter Straub (Ghost), Dan Simmons (Summer of Night) they're okay but not some of my favorite. I decided to give other horror authors a chance and found a few I actually enjoyed.

The end result: a collection of the scariest books of all time, based on popular opinion. For what it's worth. The following books appeared on the most lists: The Haunting of Hill House, by Shirley Jackson — 14 lists. The Exorcist, by William Peter Blatty — 11 lists. House of Leaves, by Mark Z. Danielewski — 11 lists.
I'm really curious to hear what all of your all time favourite horror novels are! It doesn't matter if they are novels, novellas, short story collections or single short stories. It also doesn't matter to me if it's a top 3, top 10, or just one novel! Which ones are in your top tier?
Best Horror Books. I've looked at 48 blogs and the top books in Goodreads and compiled a list of the most recommended horror books. There's 99 books on the list, I copied the top 20 here. The full list is at https://www.readthistwice.com/lists/best-horror-books.
Whenever these lists come out, they're not an actual list of the 'best' horror books, but rather a mix of the most famous classics and recent bestsellers. There are plenty of books on that list that aren't going to terrify most horror fans, and more than a few that aren't even that good.
Some horror novels don't frighten people because there is no suspension of disbelief. For me, the scariest stories are those that actually have a chance of coming true. Kids can be scary.
Here's a shortlist of favorite horror novels, (A list of short story authors would definitely include EA Poe, T Ligotti, A Machen, A Blackwood, CA Smith, R Aickman, C Barker and B Evenson.) Dracula by Bram Stoker
