This essay is an attempt to address a twin concern that undergraduate peer mentoring programs need a more adequate theoretical basis for practice and that, in particular, the limited discourse on mentoring theory must be expanded to include a variety of critical theories.
The first framework views mentoring as a process of increasing student involvement in a wide variety of academic activities, as early as possible in a student’s college career. This framework draws from Alexander Astin’s theory of student involvement (Astin, 1977, 1984, 1999).
e teacher mentoring involves a wide range of abilities, skills, attitudes, and perspectives. In a broader definition, Adams (2012) stated that mentoring is a nurturing process in which a more skilled person, serving as a role model, teaches, sponsors, encourages, counsels, and befriends.
