Traditional mentoring begins with the assumption that the school, as the site of student learning and growth, is either value-neutral or yields unilaterally positive impacts on students. In traditional approaches, the school is understood as little more than a container in which a generalized process of development is carried out.

Traditional definitions of mentoring assume a power differential inherent in mentoring relationships, and traditional mentoring is often depicted as a hierarchical relationship with the
significance of having a tutoring, coaching, and mentoring system in place to boost student retention and help them improve their academic and learning performance, as well as to assist teachers in receiving accurate feedback to improve their teaching process.
