Ideally, after a nurse completes orientation, he/she will be mentored. Mentoring may be a formal or informal. Process works best when it is intentional. Purpose is to: encourage, support and guide nurses in their positions so that they will continue to grow personally and professionally.
Clinical nurse mentors act as role models to students and have the opportunity to instil professional values and integrity in clinical settings. They support students in practicing safe, person-centred care that is in line with EU Directive 2013/55/EU Article 31 (page 4).
Definition of a Mentor: A skilled and knowledgeable expert who has expressed an interest and is committed to a formal supportive relationship with a faculty member, which will enhance the professional growth and development of that individual.

Objective. To identify and synthesize research on in-service nurse mentoring programs. Methods. We reviewed nurse mentoring research from six databases.
Result: The analysis clarifies the definition, interpretive use of mentoring and application of mentoring in nursing practice. It also establishes a conceptual meaning of mentoring to examine the existence of mentoring measures and to assess the utility within nursing and other related field.
