In this chapter we will focus on defining what mentorship is, exploring the key 5 qualities that contribute to successful mentorship. Objective. To identify and synthesize research on in-service nurse mentoring programs. Methods. We reviewed nurse mentoring research from six databases.
This chapter provides a definition of mentoring, including a brief history of the field, and compellingly demonstrates the benefits of and the need for mentorship programs to support the field of nursing today and into the future.
Mentoring in nurse-to-nurse relationship is important for developing the next generation of nurses and for supporting experienced nurses during role transitions across their career.
