Dictionary definitions associate transducer with a device that converts one form of energy (or power) into another, and sensor with a device that perceives a physical stimulus giving a signal as a result.
Transducers: Devices used to transform one kind of energy to another. When a transducer converts a measurable quantity (sound pressure level, optical intensity, magnetic field, etc) to an electrical voltage or an electrical current we call it a sensor. We will see a few examples of sensors shortly.
This learning module is one of three SCME modules that discuss the types of components found in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). This module covers “transducers” – what they are, how they work and how they are used in both macro and micro-sized systems.
A terminology distinction is to use sensor for the actual sensing element and transducer for the sensing element plus any associated circuitry. All transducers would thus contain a sensor and most sensors would also be transducers. Electromechanical output devices are generically called actuators.
A transducer is a device that converts one type of energy to another. The conversion can be to/from electrical, electro-mechanical, electromagnetic, photonic, photovoltaic, or any other form of energy. While the term transducer commonly implies use as a sensor/detector, any device which converts energy can be considered a transducer.

Sensors are sometimes called transducers, although transduction is more correctly used to refer to bidirectional mechanisms such as piezoelectricity that can convert between pressure and charge. There are almost as many sensors as sensees.
